We are within the Proclamation Boundary of the El Yunque National Forest, which is a 28,000 acre nature preserve. There are 7 municipalities that ring the forest. We are on the south side in the municipality of Naguabo, one hour and a quarters drive from San Juan. Our physical address is State road # 191 km 22. One note of caution. If you enter the forest from the north side, where the visitors center is located, you cannot continue on road #191 to the south side. There is a landslide in between, you must drive around and then go up.
Directions from San Juan: Follow Hwy #26 south past the San Juan International airport. It turns into the new Hwy #66 ( toll $1.50 ) be sure not to take any exit off of #26. Stay left towards Fajardo.
Hwy #66 ends at a light next to the Belz Outlet Mall. Turn right at that light onto #3 and follow that road ( past Rio Grande, Luquillo and Fajardo ) where it turns into Hwy #53. (Toll one time $ .50) exit at exit
#22 which says 'Rio Blanco and Juncos' (just past Naguabo exits) turn right on road (#31) for less than a mile and stay straight onto road #191. Do not turn left at the small suspension bridge on #31, continue up #191 and make a left turn on the concrete bridge, follow that road about 15 minutes (#191) all the way to the top and Casa Cubuy Ecolodge is the second from the last structure on the road.
Alternative scenic route from San Juan Daytime only! : You can drive east along the north coast on road # 187 out of Isla Grande, which parallels the ocean, cross the first bridge just past the hotels. A few miles of scenic roads and beaches end after crossing the large bridge over the Loiza River. Turn right at the second light which takes you out to Hwy # 3 at the Belz Outlet Mall where you turn left on # 3 and follow that road ( past Rio Grande, Luquillo and Fajardo ) where it turns into Hwy # 53. Directions through Caguas ( or from San Juan through Caguas) Take #52 South towards Caguas from San Juan. When you pass the toll that is on the other side of the road (ONLY) your exit (#14) is 500 yards past the toll booths. Be sure to be in the right lane so you can make this exit. You will be on the old hwy #1 about one mile. stay right and take the exit immediately after the overpass. Sign says Humacao #30. About 11 minutes later take exit # 14 ( another 14) and turn left onto # 31. 20 minutes. ( scenic, windy country road, narrow) until you cross the small suspension bridge (just after the small town of Rio Blanco). Turn left immediately after the bridge onto #191. In 2 minutes you make a left turn over the concrete bridge. Follow that road about 15 minutes ( #191) all the way to the top and Casa Cubuy Ecolodge is the second from the last structure before the road ends.
Any way you choose to come takes about one hour and 15 minutes. Providing you leave the metro area before rush hour traffic which starts around 3:30 pm.
